The two paths — a local’s and a visitor’s, all the way through

We’d shown the two Todays side by side; this traces the two journeys — from first open through the early lifecycle — because they diverge at the fork and never fully re-converge. The visitor path is the one the overnight review said we’d left a hole in: a 2-night visitor runs on a different clock entirely, and most of our asks would either misfire or arrive after they’ve gone home. Here’s each path made whole.

Shared start Beat 1 · Brand is identical for everyone — the finite-weekends cold open and the serif τ. The paths split at Beat 2 · the fork (“live here, or visiting?”) and run differently from there.
● The local’s path
Maya — lives in Chattanooga
“What’s worth leaving the house for this weekend, around the places I already know?” Open-ended. Her people are here.
1
Brand
The finite-weekends cold open. Same for everyone.
2
The fork → “I live here”split
Sets Local mode. The persistent mode chip is born here.
3
Your areadiverges
Pick the neighborhoods you move between — multi-select (Northshore + Downtown). Location permission framed by the map it fills.
4
What you’re into
The ten event families. Same taxonomy for both.
5
The float — your crewframing
Float a night to the people who live here. The hero beat. They tap your link, app or not.
6
What do you go by?
Display name only. Invite is deferred. Same.
7
Notifications
Same ask. (Permission timing is the open question for avatars.)
8
First Today — your weekenddiverges
“Here’s your weekend,” built from her picks; what’s new in her areas; her followed bands. Full Today →
Her clock — open-ended
Day 1Onboarding → a real solo Today. Browses, saves a couple.
ReturnsOn distinct days. Float tip after she’s saved 2+; invite when she taps Float it.
A float landsResolved with 1+ in → the morning-after review ask. value-gated
Every ThursdayThe weekend push (rotating; silent on an empty week). The weekly heartbeat. ongoing
ForeverIndefinite library of saves; the relationship has no end date.
◆ The visitor’s path
Dani — in town Thu–Sun, staying downtown
“I’m here ~3 nights near my hotel — what would I be sorry to miss, and what’s close?” Bounded. Maybe traveling with someone.
1
Brand
The same finite-weekends cold open.
2
The fork → “I’m visiting”split
Sets Visiting mode — and everything downstream reshapes.
3
Anchor + datesdiverges
“Where are you staying, and when?” Hotel anchor + optional trip dates. The dates start the trip clock; skip them and it still works, just no countdown.
4
What you’re into
Same ten families — but they’ll rank toward the signature, not the regulars.
5
The float — who you came withframing
Reframed: coordinate with your travel companions (“who’s up for the rooftop tonight?”). For a solo visitor, this beat softens — it’s not the hero it is for Maya.
6
What do you go by?
Same.
7
Notifications
Same ask — but tuned to the trip, not a weekly rhythm (see clock).
8
First Today — your tripdiverges
“You’re here through Sunday · 2 nights left.” Can’t-miss this window, distance-from-hotel, a “what Chattanooga’s known for” orientation. Full Today →
Her clock — trip-relative the gap the review caught — now designed
Night 1 of 3Onboarding → trip Today. “Most of the weekend’s still ahead — here’s tonight.”
Mid-tripA single “don’t-miss-while-you’re-here” nudge, not a weekly anything. No Thursday rhythm — she won’t be here next Thursday.
Last night“One night left in town” — the urgency the countdown earns.
Heading homeA trip-end reflection (“How was Chattanooga?”) that doubles as the review moment — her real value point, instead of an arbitrary day-3 prompt. review fires here
After checkoutPush goes quiet — no weekend nudges to someone who’s left. The trip shortlist closes. If she comes back (or visits a new city), the trip clock restarts.

What this surfaces for the avatar test

Two things to put in front of the personas today: (1) does the visitor’s trip-relative clock feel right end to end — does any ask fire honestly, and does the trip-end reflection land as a natural review moment rather than an interruption? (2) The solo visitor — for someone traveling alone, the float beat (5) softens; is the visiting path still complete and satisfying without it, the way the deliberate-soloist local needs the solo value moment to stand alone? These are the two “does the mode actually hold up” questions the review left open.
